Rita Chiarelli is packing an ever more powerful artistic punch. Breakfast at Midnight, the Hamilton-born singer-songwriter-guitarist's fourth CD and first for NorthernBlues (previous releases were with Stony Plain), is an absolutely great album from the opening strums of the very blue Woman in Blue to the who-gives-a-damn-about-that-now finale, Eggs Over Easy. Breakfast at Midnight serves up 11 original, gut-grabbing songs that elevate Chiarelli to the talent level of Chrissie Hynde, Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin. The varied Breakfast menu inclues the Tex-Mex flavour of Never Been Loved Before, the hickory-smoked Memphis Has Got The Blues and the jazzy schnapps of Midnight in Berlin, which Long John Baldry recorded on his Right To Sing The Blues. Turn down the lights and get ready to howl along with the outstanding I Can Change For You. The tight band of quality musicians includes Colin Linden, Kevin Breit, Papa John King, Carlos del Junco and producer Danny Greenspoon. After two listenings, I bought five to give to people who mean a great deal to me.
